Career Development & Experience
June 1997 - Current
Kevin Shoffner
Freelance Web Developer, Graphic Designer
Greensboro, NC
- Started creating personal websites for myself, friends, family, and non-profit organizations to learn more about HTML techniques. Spent two years working with computer users at both East Carolina University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro, learning there was a need for better compatibility and user friendly applications both on and offline for all users.
- During times of fulltime and other non-contract work I have worked freelance fulltime, while at other times I only would work part-time on projects. One of my specialties which I have focused on is dedicating over 8 years focusing on Quality Assurance and Accessibility in regards to web based design, development, and applications. Not only do I have the working knowledge of over 8 years making web sites and web applications more accessible to those who may have special needs, but I also make it one of top priorities when publishing anything online to be easily accessible to everyone.
- My projects include making a fully flash based website for a printing/publishing company, creating custom Blogs for family and friends, administration of Corporate Portals, preparing documentation and testing for websites to be accessible to a large user base, CMS projects for companies who wanted something they could have easy control over, and development of an e-Commerce site for a Golf/Tennis Facility.
September 2007 - March 2009
SPI Software Solutions, Inc.
Web Developer / Graphic Artist / Network Technician
Greensboro, NC
- My primary job function at SPI Software Solutions has been to bring my previous 3+ years of experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) and 4+ years using QA, Accessibility testing and troubleshooting, I have been able to produce newly designed and redesigned websites that meet all current W3C standards, while preparing for future challenges, for browsers such as Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, Opera and others. While doing this, I still focus on keeping the design appealing for “visual” user
- Recently, redesigned a local furniture company internal sales and logistics website for all of their stores to be able to place orders. This site had to be compatible with Macs and PCs alike, as their previous version did not meet this standard; so I went through the entire site redeveloping a new layout based upon the use of more browser friendly Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) that would function correctly outside of an Internet Explorer environment, and was able to have it ready for the Fall Furniture Market deadline in early October.
- Also use my 4+ years of PHP and mySQL experience to maintain a Real Estate website which has clients throughout the entire United States, having over 500 agents to directly access this website for sales leads, leasing agreements, and uploading/editing new listing information.
- Focus a great deal on Adobe’s newer products such as Flash CS3 and Flex 2-3 to build interactive web applications for users and clients.
December 2003 - June 2007
White Stone, NC
MIS Coordinator, Web Developer
Greensboro, NC
- While working at White Stone, I also focused on designing the Home’s website. I designed it to use PHP and mySQL for different departments to be able to post different notices and news about their individual departments for employees and patient family members to keep up to date.
- I created many forms of documentation for both online and print for the residents / patients of the Home to assist them in accessing the internal website and many other websites, so they were able to stay in touch with family and friends, as well as keeping up with news.
- Responsible for maintaining entire corporation network and systems, following strict HIPAA guidelines, using both wired and wireless capabilities throughout the facility. Put entire company network on Active Directory and on same domain. Also began using Microsoft’s SMS 2003 and other tools to implement network wide updates and configurations. Maintained database driven support and applications for work requests, purchase requisitions, updating patient and employee information using Oracle and mySQL driven databases.
November 2001 - August 2003
American Express
Customer Service Specialist
Greensboro, NC
- As a customer service specialist, I focused on being a strong team leader, while listening and providing service to clients on a one to one basis. I was able to walk people through the most hard to understand issues that may have occurred with them, as well as educating them for future purposes.
- During my service at this corporation, I was invited to a new program which they needed some assistance in transferring their Kronos time clock information using Visual Studio into a web-based, and .NET driven application for all employees. Unfortunately due to delays with portions of the .NET project, I had left the company before it was published world-wide.
March 2001 - December 2002
SPI Software Solutions
Web Developer / Graphic Artist
Greensboro, NC
- As main developer and graphic artist, I redesigned the company’s and all of the clients’ websites while working here. Also I played a big role in providing technical support and issues which may have related to the client and their website at any given time. This proved to be a great fit, as I would also soon begin to develop applications for some of the clients which did not deal with the internet, but just generalized business applications.
- Designing websites using strict guidelines and standards from 2+ years (at the time) experience in Quality Assurance, W3C Standards, to make websites functional and accessible to visitors of the clients’ websites.
- At SPI, I worked to developed JavaScript, ASP, and SQL applications for a variety of clients who still use these programs and applications today.
March 2000 - April 2001
Beacon Technologies
Web Developer / Graphic Artist
Greensboro, NC
- While at Beacon Technologies, I was able to broaden my knowledge in many software applications while working with large Government and Educational clients to develop websites and business applications to suit their needs.
- Most of the clients have very strict requirements for Accessibility, so I was quickly moved to a team of researchers that focused on W3C Standards. Becoming a W3C specialist I was able to work with disabled users to overcome any obstacles which they come across online. We focused to not only meet Section 508 guidelines, but to also focus on upcoming W3C and WAI guidelines as well.
- Not only did I help develop and design graphical interfaces and storefronts for e-Commerce businesses, but also worked closely in the development of Intranets and University websites for loan applications and data processing. These applications were usually developed in a combination of HTML, ASP, JavaScript, and SQL depending on the customers’ needs and wants.

- Provided technical support within the department, as needed, with issues relating to Microsoft Office, printers, and computers. Also developed and maintained on-going Excel worksheets and Access Databases for the Annuity Actuarial department for use for agents and reference points for interest gained per policy. Most of the Excel worksheets used complex macros, while the Access Databases were used to promote and implement a conversion from Excel to Access.
